Delhi to receive 800 tonnes of onions for sale at ₹35 per kg

About 800 tonnes of onions are scheduled to arrive in Delhi on Wednesday in the first Kanda Express consignment. The onions will be sold at ₹35 per kg through NAFED, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar outlets.

Delhi’s retail onion price was ₹55 per kg on Tuesday, making the planned sale price about 36% lower.

The Union government is drawing the supply from Maharashtra, where it maintains an onion buffer stock for price interventions. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said the consignment would be sold through the three designated outlet networks.

At a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government said there was no current shortage of onions or sugar. It said it would procure both commodities from NAFED and make them available across the city if prices rise further.

The Chief Minister’s Office said the government would sell onions and sugar at procurement prices while covering transport and related costs. Sugar retailed at ₹64 per kg on Tuesday, compared with ₹63.05 a day earlier. Food and Supplies Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said action would be taken if sugar stocks exceeded Centre-prescribed limits intended to curb hoarding.
