Delhi Metro murals at Barakhamba Road, Hauz Khas and Kashmere Gate

A mural of Connaught Place greets commuters at Barakhamba Road Metro station, where the walls also depict several of Delhi’s landmarks.

Across the network, Metro stations feature works that draw on the city’s places, people and cultural traditions. At Shree Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar, formerly Mayur Vihar Pocket 1, a series of portraits places women by windows against different views of the city. Arjan Garh station, on the route towards Gurgaon, has a blue peacock and monkeys in a street-art-inspired work.

Hauz Khas interchange presents two distinct murals. One brings together sites including Humayun’s Tomb and Agrasen ki Baoli. Another uses a mostly monochrome composition, with phones in colour, to reflect on screen use in crowded public spaces.

At Kashmere Gate, the artwork includes a British-era map and scenes of colonial-period streets and landmarks. Khan Market station’s murals draw on Indian dance traditions.

Mural artist Laxman Singh Bisht, who has worked on several Metro station murals, said the work matters when it connects a station to “the city, its people and its culture.”
