FSSAI seizes misbranded infant food at Bengaluru-based British Life Sciences

Food safety officials have seized a significant quantity of misbranded infant food from Bengaluru-based British Life Sciences Private Limited and begun legal proceedings against the firm.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said its inspection found violations of food safety standards involving infant food products. It said the products were seized under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, citing the potential risk that non-compliant products can pose to infants and young children.

FSSAI also said about 3.7 metric tonnes of expired infant food articles were destroyed on court directions. The stock was disposed of to prevent its reuse, diversion or return to the food chain.

British Life Sciences is part of British Biologicals and specialises in maternal and child nutrition. The action follows wider food-safety enforcement in Karnataka, including a recent direction giving food businesses 15 days to address hygiene violations.
