GBA told to plan animal crematoria in four Bengaluru city corporations

Bengaluru’s only animal crematorium is at Sumanahalli. The four other city corporations need facilities of their own as the city expands its stray-dog sterilisation programme, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda told officials on Tuesday.

Around 280 stray dogs undergo Animal Birth Control (ABC) surgeries each day, or nearly 7,000 a month, Mr. Gowda said while reviewing works and programmes across the five city corporations. The programme is expected to carry out about 80,000 surgeries annually.

He directed officials to begin work towards establishing animal crematoria in the corporations that do not have them. He also asked for more kennels to support the increased ABC operations.

The directions place animal-care infrastructure alongside the scale-up of sterilisation work, which requires space for dogs during treatment and facilities for handling animal remains.
