Ghaziabad logs 79 snatching cases by August 15, down from 245 in 2025

Ghaziabad logged 79 snatching cases between January 1 and August 15, compared with 245 in the same period in 2025 and 293 in 2024, police said.

The commissionerate attributed the decline to border checks, CCTV mapping and use of UP Police’s YAKSH platform, which combines AI, big-data analytics and geo-tagged information for crime prevention and investigation. Police said they had verified 33,978 people with criminal records, mapped 3,680 lanes and localities across 2,132 beats, and added 14,745 CCTV cameras to the system.

Police data showed that 63 of the 91 people arrested in snatching cases during the period were from outside Ghaziabad, including Delhi, Meerut and Baghpat. Wave City ACP Priyashri Pal said teams drawn from 25% of personnel at each police station were conducting barricading and night checks at district borders and other areas identified by police as sensitive.

Police have also asked residents, housing societies and trade associations to install CCTV cameras. Pal said the cameras can assist investigations and deter offences. Police said they took action against 58 people under Section 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, invoked the Gangsters Act against 12 people, externed 10 people alleged to be involved in snatching, and arrested 24 people after exchanges of fire.
