GMDA cites faulty Vatika Chowk gate in Sohna Road flooding

A gate near Vatika Chowk did not fully divert water from the Badshahpur drain into the SPR drain during Monday’s rain, contributing to flooding on Sohna Road, GMDA officials said.

The gate sits at the junction of Leg 3 of the Badshahpur drain and Leg 4 along Southern Peripheral Road. It has two shutters with gaps between them. Officials said the gaps and a delay in closing the gate allowed water from the Badshahpur drain to overflow.

About 80mm of rain caused waterlogging on Sohna Road and adjoining areas, leading to traffic gridlock. At least 14 school buses were stranded on flooded roads across Gurugram.

Leg 4, built for more than ₹100 crore, is intended to carry excess stormwater from DLF Phase 1, Sectors 42, 43, 52A and 53 to 67, and nearby villages. GMDA said it has ordered repairs to the gate. The Badshahpur drain can carry about 3,800 cusecs, while Leg 4 has a capacity of 1,800 cusecs.

During an inspection on Tuesday, GMDA CEO PC Meena also identified an unconnected stormwater drain near Medanta underpass and Hospital Road, blocked drainage chambers at Subash Chowk, and a 90-degree diversion in a master drain near an underpass.
