GMDA hires consultant to link recycled-water pipelines in Gurugram

GMDA has appointed a consultant to prepare a detailed project report for connecting recycled-water pipelines in Gurugram sectors 58-80 and 81-115.

The authority says about 30 km of pipeline in sectors 58-80 is partly functional, while 58 km in sectors 81-115 is unused because links are missing. GMDA plans to use the integrated network to supply treated water to green belts, local parks and central verges, instead of using potable water for horticulture and other non-potable needs.

GMDA currently produces 243 million litres a day (MLD) of treated water at its Dhanwapur and Behrampur plants and uses about 202 MLD, it said. Of this, 143 MLD is sent through an irrigation channel to Jhajjar district for agriculture, 35 MLD is used for city horticulture and around 20 MLD is supplied to industry. Some treated water is also sent to ponds for groundwater recharge.

A further 56 km of recycled-water pipeline is functional in sectors 1-57. New treatment units at Behrampur and Dhanwapur are expected to add 165 MLD of recycled-water capacity by the end of next year.
