Gurgaon Civil Hospital proposes 30-minute ICU power backup

Patients in the ICU and high-dependency unit at Gurgaon Civil Hospital may receive up to 30 minutes of backup power during outages under a proposed Haryana government project.

The plan calls for two 40 KVA online UPS systems for critical-care areas and medical equipment at the Sector 10 hospital. The Rs 18.8 lakh project has a completion period of four months.

The UPS units are intended to protect equipment from voltage fluctuations, overcharging, short circuits and deep battery discharge. Alarms would alert staff to mains failure, low battery and overload.

The proposal follows an April 2023 short circuit that caused an outage of more than 12 hours at the hospital. Registration computers stopped working, staff shifted to manual operations and several patients were turned away. Emergency and gynaecology wards continued on existing backup power.

Separately, the public works department has proposed a 40 KVA diesel generator for the government mortuary on Mehrauli Road. The Rs 7.5 lakh project also includes security lights at Civil Hospital and has a five-month completion period.
