Haryana’s EV tax exemption policy, effective from August 21, waives motor vehicle tax for new battery-operated vehicles costing up to Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom.

The first registrations under the policy have been recorded in Gurgaon and Badshahpur, where two buyers saved Rs 2.45 lakh and Rs 81,120 respectively. EVs priced above Rs 30 lakh receive a 50% motor vehicle tax exemption, but only if they are bought and registered in Haryana.

Vikrant saved Rs 2.45 lakh in motor vehicle tax while registering a Mahindra BE Formula EV in Gurgaon under Haryana’s new EV tax exemption policy.

The policy, in effect from August 21, gives a full motor vehicle tax waiver on new battery-operated electric vehicles priced up to Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom. It covers electric two-wheelers, autos, e-rickshaws and four-wheelers. Vehicles costing more than Rs 30 lakh receive a 50% tax exemption.

In Badshahpur, Rashil Goyal received an Rs 81,120 benefit while registering a Tata Tiago EV. Gurgaon deputy commissioner Uttam Singh said the measure offers buyers direct financial relief while encouraging cleaner transport.

The benefit applies only to EVs purchased and registered in Haryana, Badshahpur SDM Sanjeev Singla said. A vehicle bought in another state will not qualify for the tax exemption, even if its owner seeks registration in Haryana.

For Gurgaon residents weighing an EV purchase, the waiver changes the upfront registration cost, with the amount depending on the vehicle’s ex-showroom price and applicable motor vehicle tax.
