Gurgaon Metro places first 160-tonne U-girder near Cyber Park

A 160-tonne U-girder was placed between two piers near Cyber Park on Friday night, the first such segment installed for the elevated Gurgaon Metro structure.

The segment was placed between piers P2/26 and P2/27. Each girder is about 28 metres long and five metres wide, and contains nearly 16 tonnes of steel and around 60 cubic metres of M-60 grade concrete. Its base will function as the track slab, while its sides are designed to serve as derailment retainers, sound barriers and maintenance or evacuation walkways.

Gurgaon Metro Rail Limited plans to use more than 1,600 U-girders across the project, launching two for each span during night-time operations. The agency said moving the precast units through the city and positioning them with heavy-duty cranes is among the most demanding parts of construction.

Phase 1 civil work is about 32% complete, while overall project completion has crossed 10%, GMRL said. Most government land required for the work has been cleared, while a forest-related clearance is still expected. GMRL has set 2028 as the Phase 1 completion target and is preparing tender documents for Phase 2.
