Gurugram adds drunk-driving checkpoints as licence suspensions stop after May

Gurugram traffic police have expanded drunk-driving enforcement checkposts from four to 25 in two months, while licence suspensions for those booked have not been recorded after May.

Between January and August, police issued 13,703 drink-driving challans. From January to April, 2,349 of 6,658 challans resulted in licence suspensions. That included 813 licences issued by Gurugram’s Regional Transport Authority and 1,536 issued outside the city.

The district road safety committee has directed the RTA and traffic police to ensure regular suspension of licences for violators. Revised district protocols introduced in October 2025 allow for temporary suspensions of three months.

Police made 1,536 revocation recommendations in June, 973 in July and 1,755 by the end of August, based on the seriousness of cases, safety risks and breath-analyser findings. Officials are seeking a digital system that can process licences issued outside Gurugram without having to contact transport authorities in other states individually.

Monthly challans rose from 1,314 in January to 2,371 in May, before falling to 1,420 in August.
