Delhi rain floods roads; PWD deploys pumps at waterlogging hotspots

Heavy rain for a second day left roads waterlogged across Delhi on Tuesday, slowing traffic in several parts of the city.

Waterlogging was reported in Kamla Nagar, Azad Market, Ashoka Road, Sangam Vihar, Ansari Nagar near AIIMS, Mandi House, Connaught Place and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. In Mahipalpur, students were seen wading through waist-deep water. At Safdarjung Hospital, two people moved a patient on a stretcher through a flooded stretch.

One commuter said the journey on Ring Road from Dhaula Kuan to Rajouri Garden and Punjabi Bagh took more than an hour. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh called the flooding “temporary water accumulation” and said teams were using pumps, cleaning drains and carrying out field-level work.

PWD said it had deployed pumping arrangements at Minto Bridge, Zakhira underpass, Pul Prahladpur, Azadpur underpass, ITO, Loni Golchakkar, NH-24 Patparganj, Dasmesh Road and Jahangirpuri, among other sites. The department said Delhi’s interconnected drainage network requires coordination with MCD, NDMC, Delhi Jal Board, DDA, Railways and other agencies.

Singh said pre-monsoon work had reduced identified waterlogging points from 194 to 65 and recurring hotspots from 53 to 20.
