IIT Delhi forms external panel to examine MSc student’s death

IIT Delhi has formed an external inquiry committee to examine the death of 31-year-old MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar, after students boycotted classes and held demonstrations on campus seeking an independent investigation.

The panel will speak with students, faculty members and administrative offices, review the institute’s existing processes and protocols, and make recommendations. It has been asked to submit its report within two weeks. Its members include former Uttarakhand director general of police Ashok Kumar, AIIMS Delhi psychiatry head Prof Pratap Sharma, and two student representatives.

Students have alleged administrative lapses and sought accountability from senior officials, along with compensation of Rs 1 crore for Kumar’s family. They have also asked the institute not to take action against students participating in the protest.

IIT Delhi has also proposed appointing an external ombudsperson for grievances that remain unresolved through its internal mechanisms.
