IIT Delhi students boycott classes after MSc student’s death on campus

Students began gathering outside IIT Delhi’s Lecture Hall Complex around 8.30am on Monday, boycotting classes two days after an MSc student died on campus. When rain arrived, the sit-in moved inside the complex.

The students sought an independent investigation into what they described as administrative lapses, along with accountability for any officials found responsible. They also demanded that classes at the Lecture Hall Complex and elsewhere on campus be suspended for the day.

Their memorandum called for a review of issues they said can contribute to student distress, including academic-project allocation, accommodation and mental-health support. Students also sought compensation for the student’s family, protection from disciplinary action for those taking part in the protest, and the resignation of senior student-affairs officials and the head of the physics department.

IIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee and senior faculty members met the protesters. Students said the administration agreed to consider compensation and an inquiry, while several demands, including the requested resignations, remained unresolved. Banerjee confirmed the meeting but did not comment further.
