Delhi rainfall revised to 197.2mm after IMD data-entry error

Delhi’s August rain tally has been cut to 197.2mm after the India Meteorological Department corrected an incorrect entry in its Safdarjung data.

The agency had said on Monday that the city received 234.5mm in the first 10 days of August, enough to exceed the month’s expected total rainfall of 233.1mm. Its revised bulletin puts the cumulative figure at 197.2mm, leaving Delhi about 36mm short of that benchmark.

IMD regional meteorological scientist Krishna Mishra said 56mm had been entered for the August 5-6 observation period instead of 18.7mm. The 37.3mm difference accounts for the change in the month’s cumulative total. Mishra said the daily Delhi bulletin had carried the correct figure and the online table has been updated.

For Wednesday and Thursday, the IMD forecast very light to light rain across Delhi. On Tuesday afternoon, Safdarjung recorded 4mm of rain, while Delhi Ridge recorded 3.7mm and Mayur Vihar and Pusa logged 3mm each.
