Gurugram’s South City-1 group says it cares for 150 street dogs

Monica Sharma began feeding street dogs in Gurugram’s South City-1 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Six years later, she says the Dog Welfare Group of South City-1, formed with residents and other dog lovers, cares for about 150 dogs in the neighbourhood.

The group has designated feeding points and pays young people working in cloud kitchens to feed dogs there regularly, Sharma said. It also coordinates sterilisation, vaccination and medical treatment. Sharma estimates that about 90% of the area’s street dogs have been sterilised and vaccinated.

Sharma said she largely pays for feeding, treatment, sterilisation and vaccination herself, with volunteers supporting the work.

On Thursday, a taxi driver called Sharma about a puppy near Millennium City Centre metro station that needed medical help. She went to assist it.
