Karnataka AI university panel plans training before university is set up

Karnataka’s consultation committee for the proposed Artificial Intelligence University plans to begin AI training programmes while the university moves through the legislative and institutional process.

At the committee’s first meeting in Bengaluru, members said AI education and skilling should proceed alongside work to establish the university. Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan chairs the committee, with N Manjula, secretary of the state’s department of electronics, IT, biotechnology and science technology, serving as co-chair.

Industry and academic institutions are expected to work together on certificate and diploma courses, finishing-school programmes, executive education and reskilling. The proposed curriculum includes generative and agentic AI, data analytics, cloud technology, cybersecurity, AI infrastructure and data centres, physical AI, semiconductors, hardware applications and basic AI literacy.

Gopalakrishnan said the immediate aim is to map existing training programmes, expertise and academic infrastructure, and bring them together to build AI talent and employment opportunities. Manjula said an institutional structure would coordinate participating organisations and assess curricula, examinations and certifications.

The committee plans to measure outcomes through employment, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities linked to AI skilling.
