Khan Market café remains open after NDMC removes signboard

The Grammar Room remains open, its chief business officer Tanya Bhardwaj said, after a video showed a JCB removing the café’s signboard in Khan Market.

NDMC said the removal was part of a drive against oversized signboards that did not meet its Outdoor Advertisement Policy, 2017. Officials also removed cladding and water motors near building boundaries, which the civic body described as encroachments on public land.

The operation initially covered 10 to 12 complexes in one row, not the entire market, NDMC said. Its enforcement, estate, architect and EBR departments carried out the action after earlier discussions with market stakeholders, officials said. NDMC also said it had issued notices regarding the signage.

The Khan Market Traders Association disputed NDMC’s assessment of widespread encroachment. Its president, Sanjeev Mehra, said traders want NDMC to examine original allotment documents before proceeding and are seeking further discussions with officials.
