Khan Market traders seek parking and pedestrian changes before BRICS summit

Khan Market traders asked agencies to address parking shortages, blocked public spaces and difficult pedestrian movement around the market ahead of the BRICS summit.

At a Traffic Panchayat at the Disaster Management Centre on Humayun Road, Delhi Police, Delhi Traffic Police, NDMC and traders discussed market access, crossings and traffic on Shah Jahan Road. Traders said mechanics and other businesses using public space were affecting vehicle movement, pedestrian access and parking availability.

Officials discussed an underground parking facility on a vacant plot at Amrita Shergill Marg, additional parking floors and the possible revival of an earlier underground-parking tender. NDMC said it was also considering a smart parking solution.

Traffic police discussed manually operating the Sujan Singh Park signal during peak hours and reviewing the signal timing on SBM Road, including a possible increase. Participants also proposed a one-way circulation system within the market, a dedicated taxi and TSR pick-up and drop point, and a small TSR stand at Sujan Singh Park. Hotels may be asked to regulate guest vehicle parking.

Officials said LPR cameras at the market's entry points are functional.
