Marine Drive police arrest Virar woman in ₹5 lakh bangle theft case

A diamond-studded gold bangle valued at about ₹5 lakh, reported missing from Asha Patel’s Mumbai residence in January, is yet to be recovered, police said.

Marine Drive police have arrested Seema Vinod Ghate, 40, a Virar resident who had worked at the home as a domestic worker for about one-and-a-half years. Police said Patel had suspected Ghate’s involvement and had asked her over the past five to six months to return the jewellery before filing a complaint.

The FIR was registered under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against an unidentified woman. Marine Drive police’s Crime Detection Team later traced Ghate to Virar and took her into custody.

A court remanded Ghate to police custody until September 15. Police are investigating the alleged theft, attempting to recover the bangle and checking whether she has any previous criminal record.
