Union says Delhi auto-tippers to stay off roads after Kalyanpuri worker killed

Anil Kumar, 27, was killed in east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri on Sunday. The MCD Safai Karamchari Union said garbage-collection auto-tippers will stay off Delhi roads from Monday.

Police said CCTV footage showed a man in a yellow T-shirt approach Kumar from behind, grab his collar and attack him with a knife at about 8.15 a.m. Kumar was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where he died. His relatives and local residents protested at the hospital, seeking action against the person responsible.

East Delhi DCP Rajeev Kumar said police had registered an FIR and identified a person suspected of the attack. Efforts to arrest the suspect were under way. Kumar’s family said he had no known enmity with anyone. They also alleged that they were initially told he had met with an accident before they saw stab wounds on his body.

Union leaders are scheduled to meet MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar on Monday. They plan to seek a permanent MCD job for a member of Kumar’s family and ₹1 crore in ex gratia payment. The MCD has said it will ensure compensation for the family.
