MCD clears expansion plans for Hindu and Hansraj colleges

Hindu College’s proposed girls’ hostel and first indoor sports hall have received clearance from the MCD, alongside a larger expansion plan intended to add space within its existing campus.

The MCD Standing Committee approved the layout plans for Hindu College and Hansraj College on September 1. Hindu’s plan includes a nine-storey girls’ hostel above a basement and stilt level, faculty and staff housing, an incubation centre, an amphitheatre backstage facility and a two-level indoor sports hall.

Principal Anju Srivastava said accommodation remains a concern for students arriving from outside Delhi. The existing boys’ hostel has capacity for 230 students, while the girls’ hostel, built a decade ago, no longer meets demand. She said the college has not fixed a construction timeline.

Hansraj College’s approved proposal includes separate five-storey hostel buildings for women and men, staff quarters, a residential block for teaching staff and a research-laboratory block. Basements proposed beneath the hostel buildings would provide parking. A member of the students’ union said existing hostel facilities accommodate about 200 male students and 70 female undergraduate students.
