MCD issues 11 notices as Delhi seals illegal upper floors after Satya Niketan collapse

Eleven notices have been issued in the MCD’s renewed drive against unauthorised construction, misuse of residential premises and buildings considered vulnerable to collapse.

The inspections follow the collapse of a building in Satya Niketan in southwest Delhi. Reports differ on the number of people who died in the collapse, with the toll stated as between five and seven; police said 10 people were rescued.

The MCD has ordered the immediate sealing of illegal constructions above four floors, including buildings with unauthorised fifth floors. Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi said officials found to have permitted such construction would face strict action, including dismissal.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also said five MCD officials had been suspended after the collapse. The suspended South Zone officials were identified as Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Ranvir Singh, Executive Engineer Lalit Kumar Goel, Assistant Engineer Sunil Chauhan and Junior Engineer Ashish Kumar.

Nearby paying-guest accommodations and buildings in Satya Niketan are being inspected as the wider enforcement drive continues across Delhi.
