MCD orders 24-hour clean-up and animal-control teams for BRICS summit routes

MCD teams will carry out deep cleaning along summit venues and major delegate routes from September 1 to 13, while specialised squads work round the clock to keep stray cattle, street dogs and monkeys away from those areas.

Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar issued the directions at a review meeting on August 27, telling senior officers and zonal deputy commissioners that they would be held personally responsible for unclean streets, incomplete work or other lapses in their jurisdictions.

The clean-up covers Rajghat, Bharat Mandapam, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Lotus Temple, Sunder Nursery and South Extension. MCD workers have been asked to repair damaged roads, remove construction waste, fix streetlights and ensure nearby public toilets are operational. Brown patches are to be converted into green spaces, with flower planters and decorative lighting planned around prominent landmarks.

The National Crafts Museum will host the BRICS Bazar from September 8 to 10. Enforcement teams have also been directed to remove unauthorised hoardings, act against illegal parking and clear illegal street vending from key roads, then patrol cleared stretches to prevent encroachments returning.

Public-health teams will increase mosquito fogging and spraying near event sites. Officials must document the work with before-and-after photographs.
