MCD seals 11 properties in citywide building-norm drive

Eleven properties were sealed and 46 demolition actions carried out across Delhi’s 12 MCD zones on September 17 as the civic body stepped up enforcement against dangerous buildings and construction-rule violations.

The MCD also passed 12 demolition orders against properties found to be in breach of applicable building norms. Major actions were reported from Kardampuri in Shahdara; Prasadi Mohalla and Usmanpur/New Usmanpur in the North East Zone; Shastri Park in the East Zone; and Swaroop Nagar and Rani Bagh.

A day earlier, the corporation had demolished 40 properties and sealed 16 in a separate exercise over violations of the Master Plan of Delhi and building bye-laws.

The enforcement follows the September 6 collapse of a paying-guest building in Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus, in which seven people died. Hearing a PIL on the collapse, the Delhi High Court said it was the consequence of “callous and criminal conduct”.

The MCD has directed field officials to keep watch for violations and said the drive will continue.
