Delhi: MCD asked to plan waste removal at 125 railway-track sites

MCD has 15-20 days to prepare a plan to remove and prevent waste build-up along 18.9km of railway stretches in Delhi.

The Union home secretary has asked MCD for a location-wise plan covering waste removal, daily collection, disposal and action against dumping at 125 sites beside Delhi railway tracks.

Waste has accumulated at 125 locations along 18.9km of Delhi railway stretches, and MCD must submit a clean-up and prevention plan within 15-20 days.

At a review meeting on Delhi’s cleanliness campaign, the Union home secretary directed the civic body to survey each site, estimate daily waste generation and identify gaps in collection. The Railway Board identified solid waste, encroachments and colonies adjoining the tracks as environmental, health and operational-safety concerns.

MCD, the Union Territory division and the Railway Board will map colonies bordering the tracks and identify where dumped waste originates. The proposed plan includes daily door-to-door collection in adjoining areas, including unauthorised habitations, and authorised disposal to prevent garbage from returning to railway land.

Officials also discussed enforcement against unauthorised dumping, public-awareness drives and coordination with local communities and NGOs. In March, MCD decided to engage a dedicated agency for year-round waste removal along railway land and proposed bins and collection points in consultation with residents, councillors and railway authorities.

MCD must now submit a location-wise action plan for the 125 sites within 15-20 days.
