MCG considers underground tanks and injection wells at four Gurgaon sites

MCG is considering underground storage tanks and water injection wells at Subhash Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Medanta Hospital Road and Sheetla Mata Road after heavy rain flooded key Gurgaon roads this week.

The civic body is considering wells that can handle 48 to 80 litres a second, alongside storage tanks designed for a combined capacity of three times the rainfall expected in a design storm. Under the proposal, rainwater would be diverted into underground tanks when drains are overwhelmed, filtered and then sent through injection wells into permeable underground layers where site conditions permit.

MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya discussed the proposal with IIT Gandhinagar professors Udit Bhatia and Vivek Kapadia, senior MCG and GMDA officials, and councillors. He asked for a coordinated implementation plan and said the proposed works should be completed within a year.

An IIT Gandhinagar team is due to visit the four sites on Wednesday to assess technical feasibility. It will examine local geology, permeability, groundwater levels and water quality before MCG decides whether the system can supplement drainage and pumping.
