Gurugram: MCG plans two agencies to remove stray cattle from roads

More than 35,000 stray cattle and other animals are estimated to be on Gurugram’s roads, markets and residential areas, and MCG plans to appoint two private agencies to take them to recognised cow shelters.

MCG expects to appoint the agencies next week, assigning one to each of the city’s two clusters. Three technically qualified agencies have bid for each cluster, and the lowest bidders are expected to receive the contracts.

MCG joint commissioner Preet Pal Singh said the agencies would transport stray cattle from their allotted areas to cow shelters. Their teams are to work during the day and at night, using specialised vehicles with hydraulic lifts, equipment and trained staff.

The new arrangement follows the termination of MCG’s previous cattle-catching contract over alleged negligence and missed targets. Under the proposed system, teams will geo-tag and medically examine captured animals before moving them to shelters. MCG has also proposed penalties for agencies that do not meet assigned targets.
