MMRC approval required within 50m of Mumbai Metro 3

Two Metro 3 tunnels, each about 6.35 metres wide, run roughly 17 to 25 metres below ground beneath parts of Mumbai. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has now required prior approval for redevelopment and construction within 50 metres on either side of the line’s alignment.

The rule applies to property owners, landlords, housing societies, associations and other project proponents. It covers new work as well as projects that have already received an MMRC no-objection certificate; the new safety conditions will be treated as part of the undertaking submitted with that NOC.

Activities requiring approval include drilling tubewells or sinking wells, demolition, construction, geotechnical investigations, excavation and infrastructure laying. MMRC said the measure is intended to protect Metro 3’s underground tunnels and other structures from construction-related risks.

Project proponents have also been directed to adopt safety measures around Metro structures, including regular equipment inspections, adherence to load limits and training for operators. MMRC said non-compliance could invite legal action.
