Modi, Guterres discuss UN reform during BRICS Summit in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary-General António Guterres met in New Delhi on Friday, with reform of the UN Security Council among the central points of discussion.

Both leaders emphasised multipolarity and said multilateral institutions need to reflect contemporary realities, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Guterres also congratulated Modi on India taking up the BRICS chairship for the fourth time.

Their meeting took place on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, which India is hosting in the capital under the 2026 chairship. Modi and Guterres also discussed ongoing conflicts, freedom of navigation, sustainable development, human-centric artificial intelligence, renewable energy and global food security.

India’s BRICS theme this year is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. The summit brings together the expanded 11-member grouping, following BRICS leaders gathering in New Delhi.
