Modi and Iran’s Pezeshkian meet in New Delhi during BRICS summit

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday, bringing the two leaders together for the second time in under two weeks during the BRICS Summit.

Pezeshkian, on his first visit to India, said he hoped their talks would deepen cooperation in culture, technology, trade, science and the economy. He also addressed Indian religious leaders, intellectuals and business representatives in the city.

Modi thanked Iran for its continued high-level participation in BRICS meetings and for Pezeshkian’s presence at the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum. The two leaders also exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia.

Modi said India’s position is that disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He called for continued efforts towards peace and stability in the region, including the protection of navigation, commerce and seafarers. The meeting followed Modi’s August 31 talks with Pezeshkian at the SCO Summit in Bishkek.

New Delhi is hosting BRICS leaders for the September 12–13 summit, as leaders gather in the capital.
