Mumbai Airport plans T2 washroom upgrade across 41 blocks

Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 plans to refurbish 41 passenger washroom blocks with sensor taps, touch-free doors and water-saving fittings.

Mumbai International Airport Limited has proposed refurbishing 41 washroom blocks at Terminal 2 to address wear, plumbing issues and concealed leaks.

Forty-one passenger washroom blocks at Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 are planned for refurbishment, with sensor-operated taps and touch-free door systems among the proposed additions.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) submitted the plan to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) in April 2025, citing heavy use, plumbing problems and concealed leaks. AERA recommended that the work be carried out in phases, beginning with high-traffic arrival areas.

The proposed upgrade includes new fittings and smart mirrors. MIAL said it had placed an order covering 41 passenger washroom blocks.

Water conservation is also part of the plan. MIAL said it uses waterless urinals, tap aerators and flow reducers in jet sprays across its terminals, and recycles treated wastewater for flushing, cooling and landscaping. Sensor taps can limit water flow to the time a passenger’s hands are under the spout.

The phased work is recommended to begin in Terminal 2’s arrival areas.
