Ten undergraduate students from Delhi University’s Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College ran practical science activities at government schools in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district from September 27 to October 1.
Led by Prof Parminder Kaur Narang, the group prepared modules on food-adulteration tests, forensic analysis and ball-and-stick molecular models. A session titled “Who’s the Killer? – A Forensic Murder Mystery” introduced pupils to basic forensic concepts through activities.
The students spent four days in Kanoh village, where they also met local residents. Ritul Mishra, a second-year participant, said the children were “very enthusiastic, curious and friendly”, which made the demonstrations easier to conduct.
INSCR, FEMS, ISME, INSA and IUMS organised the outreach programme, with mentorship from Prof Rup Lal and Prof Sukanya Lal. Students from six University of Delhi colleges took part in the programme, which used simple demonstrations to introduce schoolchildren to contemporary science.
