Gurugram September AQI reaches highest level since 2023

The city’s average AQI reached 114.8 in September, while the first week of October averaged 186.28.

Gurugram recorded its poorest average September air quality in three years, with low rainfall, road dust, waste fires and construction activity identified as contributing factors. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram says it will step up field inspections, sweeping and dust-removal work.

Gurugram’s average AQI was 114.8 in September, the city’s highest September average since 2023, when it was 148.8. The comparable averages were 91.1 in 2024 and 84.9 in 2025.

Pollution also climbed quickly in October. Gurugram’s average AQI from October 1 to 7 was 186.28, compared with 102.42 in the same period last year and 100.42 in 2024. Meteorological expert Navdeep Dahiya linked the increase in part to an early monsoon withdrawal and lower rainfall. Gurugram received 23.7mm of rain in September, a 52.1% deficit from the normal 49.5mm, IMD data showed.

Road dust, uncovered construction material and waste burning remain local sources of particulate pollution. An HSPCB audit in November found dust accumulation on nearly 190 of the 340 road stretches surveyed. Gurugram also recorded 239 waste-fire incidents between January 1 and September 28.

MCG said senior officials will conduct two hours of field inspections each day, while sanitation teams increase road sweeping and dust-removal work. Construction sites have also faced dust-control inspections.
