Mumbai Coastal Road traffic rises to 62,640 vehicles a day after 24x7 opening

Mumbai Coastal Road is now carrying an average 62,640 vehicles a day, nearly 81% more than before it began 24x7 operations on August 15, 2025.

The southbound carriageway accounts for 33,077 daily vehicle movements and the northbound side 29,563. Before round-the-clock access, when the road operated from 7am to midnight, the combined daily figure was 34,538. Monthly traffic has climbed from about 11.35 lakh to 18.79 lakh vehicle movements.

The road, opened in phases from March 2024, has logged 4.11 crore vehicle movements on its south section so far. Its construction cost was Rs 13,984 crore. Early planning estimates had projected roughly 68,000 cars in one direction alone, leaving current usage below those expectations.

For commuters without cars, the route remains limited. Pedestrians, two-wheelers and heavy vehicles are barred, while BEST currently operates routes A84, from Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk to Oshiwara Depot, and A78, from NCPA to Byculla. Officials said the Breach Candy control centre integrates traffic, tunnel ventilation, firefighting and surveillance systems.
