Mumbai onion retail prices climb to ₹60-70 a kg as supplies fall

Mumbai shoppers are paying ₹60-70 a kg for onions after supplies from Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune and Solapur fell.

Wholesale trader Nitin Parak said retail prices in the city have risen by around ₹10 a kg over the past month. Good-quality onions are trading wholesale at roughly ₹52 a kg, while lower-quality onions are selling at about ₹40 a kg.

At Lasalgaon APMC in Nashik, good-quality onions are selling wholesale at ₹55 a kg and lower-quality stock at about ₹45 a kg. Arrivals are about 9,000 quintals, around half the usual volume, APMC chairman D K Jagtap said.

Market participants said some Nashik farmers are holding back stock as prices rise. Traders also expect late Kharif onion production to be delayed or lower after a prolonged absence of rainfall. Those onions are generally harvested in January and February.

Jagtap said arrivals from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka could bring rates down within the next month. Lasalgaon APMC members said prices could rise further before larger volumes reach the market.
