Mumbai court denies bail in alleged insurance recruitment fraud

A Mumbai sessions court has denied anticipatory bail to Chandan Kumar, 32, who is accused of using another person to obtain an administrative officer’s job at a central government-owned insurance firm.

Kumar, a Patna resident, was appointed on April 1, 2024. Prosecutors said he received ₹20.16 lakh in salary before the company terminated his services.

The insurer began an internal inquiry after receiving an email on October 6, 2025, alleging that Kumar and two other employees had secured their appointments fraudulently.

Prosecutors said Kumar’s biometric impressions did not match those recorded during the recruitment examination. They also alleged that the same person appeared in the recruitment process for the other two employees.

The company issued Kumar a show-cause notice and terminated his services on January 6. His lawyer argued that he had not been given an opportunity to defend himself.

Rejecting the plea, the court said biometric impressions recorded during Kumar’s later training may match his own, but did not explain the alleged mismatch in the examination and interview records.
