Mumbai’s August rain fell 66% below normal after a wet July

Colaba received 164.5 mm of rain in August, a sharp drop from the 1,176.5 mm recorded there in July.

The August total was Colaba’s second-lowest for the month in 35 years. India Meteorological Department district data put Mumbai city’s August rainfall at 66% below normal and the suburbs’ at 44% below normal.

The wider Konkan region, which includes Mumbai, recorded a 33% August deficit. Maharashtra as a whole was 44% below normal, with Marathwada reporting a 69% deficit, Vidarbha 58%, Madhya Maharashtra 31% and Konkan 33%.

The IMD had forecast a below-average monsoon for 2026 and now expects September rainfall to remain below average. For Mumbai city and suburbs, the next 48 hours are expected to be generally cloudy with intermittent light rain spells. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31°C and 27°C respectively.
