NDMC plans new road-cleaning SOP for Lutyens’ Delhi

Six mechanised road-sweeping machines are already at work in the NDMC area, and the council plans to add more as it prepares a new standard operating procedure for cleaning roads and public spaces in Lutyens’ Delhi.

NDMC chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said pressure-jet water cleaning, already in use, will be combined with other measures for dust and dirt removal before the process is formalised. He said sweepers need a consistent water supply to control dust effectively.

For residents and commuters, the proposal could mean more regular mechanised cleaning on central Delhi roads. Dwivedi said roadside dust is also tied to road conditions and the upkeep of adjoining green spaces, describing some as long-standing problems that will take time to address. NDMC is considering reengineering measures and said new roads will follow international standards.

The council will also require all ground staff to wear fluorescent safety jackets, with reflective strips intended to improve visibility during dark hours. Other equipment needs, including footwear, will be assessed by the type of work.

The plan follows NDMC’s recent apology over waterlogging in central Delhi.
