New Delhi set to host BRICS summit on September 12–13

New Delhi is scheduled to host the BRICS summit on September 12 and 13, closing India’s current presidency of the grouping.

The summit is set to convene BRICS’ 11 members — Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia — along with 10 partner countries. More than 350 BRICS meetings have been held across over 25 Indian cities during the presidency.

India has named its chairmanship theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability”. The Delhi agenda is expected to include financial reform, trade, local currencies and payment mechanisms, digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence, as well as climate change, food and energy security, terrorism and development finance.

The meeting follows a BRICS foreign ministers’ gathering in New Delhi in May that did not produce a joint communiqué over differences on the West Asia crisis; India issued a chair’s statement instead. The summit will test whether the larger grouping can agree on common outcomes despite differing political and economic interests.

China takes over the BRICS chairmanship in 2027.
