NGT directs UPPCB to act on Noida wetland dumping complaints

Wetlands in Noida’s Sectors 137 and 49 are the subject of an NGT direction asking the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to ensure action on complaints about alleged dumping of municipal waste and construction debris.

The tribunal issued the direction on July 24 after applicant Abhisht Kusum Gupta submitted that he had filed representations on July 30, 2025, and July 10, 2026. The representations concerned waste and debris allegedly dumped in and around the in-situ wetlands.

The NGT directed the UPPCB member secretary to ensure that the Noida Authority takes appropriate action on the representations. If the authority does not act, the pollution board should take necessary steps, the tribunal said. Counsel for the Noida Authority told the tribunal that the authority would take remedial action.

The proceedings also referred to a Supreme Court case involving UPPCB orders on pollution in an irrigation canal near Sector 137. On May 21, 2026, the Supreme Court formed a committee led by the Union home secretary to prepare a comprehensive Yamuna Action Plan within eight weeks.

The NGT has not made a finding on whether dumping occurred. The matter is listed for hearing on October 7.
