NHAI clears two Delhi border gantries for barrier-free fee collection

NHAI has issued no-objection certificates for two proposed gantries that would collect Delhi’s entry fee and environment compensation charge without vehicles stopping at barriers.

The MCD can set up multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) systems at Jhinjholi Border/Harewali on UER-II and Kundli Border/KGT Main on NH-44. The proposed systems would use RFID and automatic number-plate recognition technology to reduce stoppages at border entry points.

NHAI said it is jointly verifying sites and assessing technical feasibility with the MCD for 10 other proposed gantries on national highways. No-objection certificates for those sites are to follow inspections and feasibility reports.

The Supreme Court directed the MCD in January to introduce a barrier-free MLFF system at all 126 toll collection points in Delhi by October 2026. NHAI said arrangements on its road stretches must remain fully barrier-free, without manual toll collection or other intervention that disrupts traffic.

The Centre has pressed for FASTag-based collection, which would avoid multiple tags, while the MCD continues to use a separate RFID tag.
