Nine-year-old injured after fall into open manhole at Sector 95 housing complex

A nine-year-old girl fell into an uncovered drainage manhole while playing at ROF Ananda in Sector 95 on the evening of August 28, leaving her injured.

The girl, who lives in Tower F of the gated complex, stepped into an opening described as about two feet wide and two feet deep at around 7.15pm. One of her legs went into the manhole while the other remained above ground. Her family took her to hospital after she returned home crying.

Her father alleged that the family spent about eight hours, from 7.30pm to 3.30am, visiting private hospitals for treatment. He said hospital staff sought CCTV footage of the fall before admission because of the nature of her injuries.

The next morning, he went to the maintenance agency’s office for the footage and alleged that an employee, identified as Jitendra, refused the request and called two men who assaulted him and his brother. Resident Rishi Shukla, who intervened, was also allegedly beaten.

Police said they have received a complaint and will examine CCTV footage to establish the sequence of the fall and the alleged assault. Enviro India said it had cooperated with authorities and provided the footage.
