PG operator arrested after Satya Niketan collapse kills seven

Sudhanshu, the operator of the boys’ PG housed in the collapsed Satya Niketan building, was arrested by Delhi Police on Wednesday as investigators examine renovation work and possible safety violations.

The five-storey building near Delhi University’s South Campus collapsed at about 1.30pm on Sunday. Rescue teams worked for more than 27 hours, switching between heavy machinery and manual digging; the operation ended at 5.10pm on Monday after the debris was cleared. Twelve people were rescued, seven of whom later died.

Police had earlier arrested Urmila, in whose name the property was registered, and her son Mahesh, who was involved in managing the PG. Investigators are also examining the role of the alleged owner and discrepancies involving the property and electricity records.

Five MCD officials have been suspended. The Delhi High Court has directed a comprehensive safety audit of PG accommodations, while the investigation continues into the collapse and the work being carried out in the building’s basement.
