Mumbai: Puja Sarup’s The Queen at NCPA on October 7 and 8
The 80-minute English play follows Queen Durga as she is sidelined in a fictional 16th-century kingdom after the king takes a younger wife.
The Queen, written by Aditya Rawal and directed by Daniel Owen D’Souza, is scheduled for two Mumbai performances at the NCPA on October 7 and 8. Puja Sarup plays Queen Durga, whose fight to retain influence unfolds amid family tensions, palace alliances and danger around the throne.
Puja Sarup’s Queen Durga is moved to the west wing of her palace after King Amar marries a younger woman. That shift sets *The Queen* in motion when the English-language historical drama reaches Mumbai’s NCPA on October 7 and 8.
Written by Aditya Rawal and directed by Daniel Owen D’Souza, the 80-minute play is set in 1585 in the fictional kingdom of Banasvan. Durga is pushed to the margins but remains alert to threats around her son, Prince Veer, and the king’s ties with the emperor.
Sarup leads a cast that includes Mukul Chadda as King Amar, Sharvari Deshpande as Laila, and Rohit Mehra or Dheer Hira as Prince Veer. Shaira Kapoor designed the set, while Khamosh Shah composed the music, with lyrics by Raghav Dutt.
The NCPA will stage *The Queen* on October 7 and 8.
