Railways approves ₹497 crore to double Chouk–Karjat line

The single-line Chouk–Karjat section on the Panvel–Karjat route will be doubled under a ₹497 crore project approved by Indian Railways.

The 10.86-km work is intended to increase capacity for passenger and freight traffic on this Central Railway section. Railways expects the doubled line to allow five additional passenger trains in each direction each day.

Railways estimates the project could carry an additional 18.35 million tonnes of freight annually and reduce freight-train waiting time on the route.

The Chouk–Karjat work is part of a wider ₹990 crore package covering two rail projects in Maharashtra. The other approved project is a line between Mukutban and Gadchandur in eastern Maharashtra.
