Rain floods Dwarka underpass near IGI Airport, briefly stranding DTC bus
Friday afternoon’s downpour flooded the PWD-maintained Dwarka underpass linking Palam with the IGI domestic terminal area, while other airport-adjacent roads and underpasses also saw waterlogging.
A DTC bus was stranded for a short time in the Dwarka underpass before temporary pumps cleared the water and other buses were diverted. Waterlogging was also reported at an underpass connecting Mahipalpur, Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj, days before Delhi hosts the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13.
A DTC bus was briefly stranded in the flooded Dwarka underpass on Friday afternoon after heavy rain swept across Delhi, disrupting a key link between Palam and the IGI domestic terminal area.
PWD officials said they deployed temporary pumps and cleared the water within minutes, while buses on the same route were diverted. The department attributed the flooding to the underpass’s large catchment area and waterlogging in nearby Mehrampur.
The rain also flooded an underpass connecting Mahipalpur, Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj. A Delhi government official said several affected roads and underpasses around IGI Airport fall under DIAL and NHAI rather than the PWD.
Under the flood-control protocol, PWD teams must alert the control room when water stagnation reaches 6 to 8 inches and begin pumping; if levels keep rising, traffic police are asked to stop movement through the underpass and DTC is told to divert buses.
The disruption follows an August 26 review meeting in which Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu asked agencies to coordinate on waterlogging ahead of the September 12-13 BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam.
