Rain waterlogs IGI Airport approaches, delays flights in Delhi

Passengers carrying luggage waded through standing water at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday after heavy afternoon rain flooded parts of the airport and nearby underpasses.

Flight operations were affected as the downpour slowed road access to the airport. IndiGo asked passengers to allow extra time for their journeys, citing waterlogging and slower traffic.

Palam recorded 72.2 mm of rain in three hours, the highest rainfall reported in the city during the spell. Waterlogging was also reported around Subroto Park, Connaught Place, Shankar Market and Barakhamba Road, with traffic moving slowly along stretches of the Inner and Outer Circles.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and winds that could gust up to 60 kmph. It forecast further rain and thunderstorms across Delhi-NCR on Saturday, while Noida and Ghaziabad were under an orange alert.
