Designer Ila Anoop says she flagged similarities between a Sabyasachi brooch saree and a design from her own 2017 collection, while maintaining she did not accuse the label of copying.

The discussion surfaced as Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s 26,000-sq-ft Mehrauli flagship drew attention in Delhi. Designer Ranjit Rodricks also shared comparisons between some Sabyasachi pieces and work by other labels; Sabyasachi’s team had not responded by publication time.

Ila Anoop, a Dehradun-based designer and former Indian Air Force pilot, says a black Sabyasachi saree with a 3D brooch resembled a brooch organza saree she designed in 2017.

Anoop posted about the similarity in July after commenting on Sabyasachi’s Instagram page. She later said the comment was hidden and uploaded a Reel titled “Sabya, why was my comment hidden?” “I wrote that it was a coincidence. I never said that they copied my design,” Anoop said.

Fashion designer Ranjit Rodricks subsequently circulated comparisons between other Sabyasachi designs and pieces by Dolce & Gabbana, as well as a ‘CAT LADY’ sweater that he said carried the same slogan as a Joanie Calpirinha design. He said the resemblances were visible but stopped short of calling them copies.

The conversation arrives around the launch of Sabyasachi’s 26,000-sq-ft flagship in Mehrauli, previously announced for August 25. The label’s team had not responded to requests for comment by publication time.
