Sabz Burj fencing remains broken nine months after car crash

Broken metal bars and rubble still line parts of the fence around Sabz Burj in Nizamuddin, nine months after a car crashed into it at two points.

The Mughal-era monument stands on a roundabout near Humayun’s Tomb, at the Mathura Road and Lodi Road crossing. Two damaged or missing sections face Humayun’s Tomb, while another broken stretch faces Lodi Road. The ground supporting the fence is also fractured in places.

An ASI official said a driver, allegedly under the influence, drove into the fence on October 14, 2025, entered the monument’s roundabout grounds and struck the fence again. Police detained the driver, the official said; the monument itself was not damaged.

The grounds are generally locked, but the openings have made it easier for people to enter, a day-shift security guard said. Night guards have sought help from staff at Humayun’s Tomb and Sunder Nursery when dealing with intruders, he added.

ASI said the Aga Khan Trust for Culture sent a detailed project report in late July under the adopt heritage scheme. Repairs are expected within a month.
